And the survey says...

Oh no!  Not again!  I don’t want to do it!

Everyone complained.  But I won.  And  the annual Family Survey was born.  That was a lot of years ago.

Now…it’s just me because the kids aren’t interested.  So once again…I am forced to think about what went wrong, what went right, and then decide if it’s worthy.

And the survey says,

What’s the most fun you’ve had this year?  Taking my bike to San Francisco via the Alameda ferry, then riding to St Francis Yacht Club to watch the America’s Cup Finals.  One person, one bike, one big crowd (I got there very early), a lunch brought by the wait staff to my seat outside, with nothing but a small fence between me, the bay, and my new Canon Power Shot.  A fabulous full day.

What’s the weirdest place you’ve been this year?  December in Maui on  Haleakala (‘house of the sun’ in Hawaiian).  Got up @ 2:30am, to be picked up with 8 others to get up to the top for a 6am sunrise @ 8500’.  Then starting at 6500’ (where bike rides start) we got on heavy-duty bikes and coasted down the mountain.  From below freezing up top, to the high of 85 degrees below, from 0 to 40 mph on the bikes.  And as one of my friends said…”and by 1pm snorkeling at the beach @ Ka’anapali.”  And napping, too.

What’s the biggest personal accomplishment you’ve had this year? Realizing that change is only as big as I make it.

Really radical changes can be something else – especially if they are dropped like bombs: unexpected and exploding.

Change is life and life is change.   Hindsight lends perspective to all things.  And with that comes wisdom.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve seen this year?  The huge, fast America’s Cup catamarans on SF Bay.

Where was your quietest moment this year? Riding my bike in Alameda in the evening, all seasons.  Also riding my bike along the beaches in Newport and Dana Point by myself; and Coronado with E&E* and S&S**.  Priceless.
Who has been the most inspirational to you this year?  My daughter Sutter…as of 2013 she has dual citizenship with New Zealand.  She also does huge volunteer work for the Christchurch TED series, has a regular job as a Project Manager, plus she and husband Sean are building a home with on a hill (seismically safe) with a view of the bay.  And Sean is building the house, under the supervision of a contractor.  I’d have him build a house for me any day!

What has been the biggest challenge to you this year?  Learning to tune out the noise in my head and letting God lead.

What’s the best book you’ve read this year? one thousand gifts (A DARE TO LIVE  FULLY, RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE), by Ann Voskamp, a NY Times bestseller. Thank you, Betty!

What’s the best movie you’ve seen this year?  I can’t think of any movie at all that has stayed with me.  Either they suck, I haven’t seen a good one, or it’s just my taste.

What’s the biggest disappointment you’ve had this year?  A flat tire on my bike?  No disappointment that I can think of.

What’s the biggest change you’ve made this year?  I made a change in my real estate business to a company that I consider a more relevant business model, after 25+ years at the previous company.  So here’s to Fusion Real Estate Network.  Virtual office, real people, a female Broker/attorney, a marketing dept, and a transaction dept.  It’s all good!

What’s your prediction for the new year?   1.  I’d like to have U.S religions that deal with their own health care be acknowledged by the Obama administration.  2. Another chew toy for Hazel (E&E’s good doggie).

And that’s my take on the survey!  To all a good YEAR!

And keep living richly!  marilyn

*S&S = Sutter and Sean
**E&E= Evan and Erin
