School Daze v. 2 You go, girls!

...from the last post...this came to me, for this post.

Back in the high school days, when I was a cheerleader (Senior year), I had the distinct non-pleasure of being in an art class.

Before that event, my first art teacher was a neat guy, Mr. Don Tredway. I think I was a freshman or sophomore. Over the years he was part of the Laguna Beach Sawdust Art Festival...which always is/has been amazing. His specialty was making jewelry (casting silver/gold rings) into his hand-made designs.

Thank you, Cathy Michaels, for painting our megphone for us! I still have mine!
He was super likeable. He always told us 'There's a right way, a wrong way, and a Tredway." Said it like it was.

I needed extra units so I took another art class in my senior year. Mr. Cliff Hooper was the art teacher. He was also a very succesful water polo coach at Corona del Mar High. But he seemed to hate me especially, and the other gals on the Pep Squad.

Turns out that he did hate me, because the Pep Squad never went to any of the swim meets, water polo games, track meets, cross country runs, or tennis matches.

Most of us do not like being hated. So I decided I'd call his bluff. I wouldn't hate him back. I would get even with him and even show him up, quietly.

I had the various members of the Pep Squad (including me) attend the swim meets, the water polo games, the track meets, cross country runs, and tennis matches, whenever our teams played at home.

Getting even with him was amazing. Mr. Hooper actually smiled at me in class. But what was more amazing is that all of the athletes seemed to be thrilled that we were coming to their events. The smiling faces of those guys...were unbelievable.

Today it's a different story. Women participate in all of those sports. I'm not sure if men participate in the Pep Squad these days at CdM High. Turn around, fair play, I say.

Life lessons, well-learned. Thanks Mr. Tredway and Mr. Cliff Hooper.

live richly, marilyn
