I'm no Giada or Ina



I proved it recently...Giada and Ina are Food Network stars. I am NOT!

The Sunday before Thanksgiving, I came home from church, flipped on the TV to keep me amused while I did things around the house. Well, the pros chefs roped me in just like a cowboy (gal) pulls in a bull, ties it up, and walks away.

I had invited a few gal pals over for Thanksgiving, saying they could bring something but I'd get the turkey sandwiches and the fixings. This tradition came from two sisters (one of which really liked to entertain but shared the food fixings amongst us), and the other liked having us all over and usually found a way to order out...so we could enjoy other festivities.  

I thought...I can do that...and that...and that. It will be easy! Well, that's what I thought. What I did was roast a turkey (I have done it for years), and made a cake, and made a cranberry cheese log. My friends still brought stuff. 

I was up past midnight for 2 nights, and got up at the crack of dawn before our Thanksgiving Day church service. And I said to myself "Self, what are you doing? What happened to your reasoning? You've lost your mind, Marilyn."

Looking back, how could I be so stupid! The cooking divas stand in front of the camera (I don't). They taste their food (I taste my own food, too, ...but I don't always know how to 'season' it, per their instructions.) They have behind-the-scenes assistants who lay it all out for them, measure each ingredient into a small bowl/container so they can just toss it into the big bowl.  I do not have an assistant. I don't even have anybody to take out the trash!  

Here's what happened:

I didn't check my oven thermometer to be sure it was accurate. Turns out the oven was not up to speed (i.e temperature). Bummer. Then I made the cake, which was too sweet but turned out okay. (The cake batter is better uncooked, than cooked.)  The other cooks brought far more interesting...well, everything. 

TA DA...the Sweet and Savory Cheese Log was a hit...and I made it for 2 other parties. 

Oh well. When I say I'm going to have turkey sandwiches....yes, I will.

A dear friend shared this photo with me.  It's a good reminder that if I have something to say, think twice before saying it! Another friend said she and her husband (who have owned a business here in A-town) are hitting the road in a motor home! They are shutting down the biz. It's the same type of motor home, as some other friends! They will be traveling to Bryce Canyon and beyond. I started to laugh out loud as I remembered that my family (mom, dad, 3 younger brothers, and myself), piled into the station wagon and we were headed to Utah. We would be seeing Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park. Both are beautiful...but you look up to see the mountains @ Zion and you look down to see the huge valley @ Bryce. And if you're cynical, you might whine that it's just a bunch of rocks.  Knowing what I know now, I would never take any kids to either place. And then I started thinking....

Kind of like the eclipse (it seldom happens but it's astounding when it does), in the last 12 days I had my hair cut, a mani/pedi done, my teeth cleaned, and my face cleaned up. I don't even remember when these items last happened in such a short time period. I felt like a million bucks. And then I started thinking about how often does the first of the month happen to be on a Sunday? Turns out google knows via the TimeandDate.com website (which is kinda fascinating). And it's more often than I thought. Oct 1st will be the next time a Sunday is the first of the month. And then I started thinking about the autumnal equinox. I mean, who doesn't? Maybe the question should be 'What are you talking (thinking) about, Marilyn?' This is my favorite time of year....autumn, fall, the space between summer and winter.
